Hi All

What do you need to make Graphene? I started with by buying Graphene which was a long time coming. Bought it from China, BIG mistake. Took to long and was wrong when it got here, you can guess the rest. Second time I got it from USA and was better, but it cost $35.00 US for 10g,$8.00 shipping and after making paint/ink that wasn't enough to do what I want but it will let you experiment a lot. The problem is where do you start and what is enough. I started with the understanding the Ink/Paint (I/P) needs to be very low in ohms, below 5 and then 1. By the time you mix your graphene and test you don't have much left to make your project that you started some 3 months ago. BUMMER. The next step is to make your own Graphene and that is where I am at now.

Step one is to get the raw materials you will need. WOW Graphite, water and Acetone and that is it. You will also need a good ultrasonic cleaner and this is what I purchased. 2.7L and deep enough to hold a 1Qt. bottle also it is low power 60 watt for heat and 60 watt for the cleaner, total 120 watts. You need to keep the cost down to buy and operate as this will be the biggest coast to you and this is what I have.

The 1QT bottle must be a sealable type for the acetone will leak out and this is why I used canning type so you can get new seals when needed. The formula for the making of this is for 1/2 liter is from Robert M Smith's video of Acetone 416.75ml, Deionized Water 88.25ml and 1.5g of graphite powder. You need to run it in you ultrasonic cleaner for 2 to 12 hours, you chose.

After you put the 3 part formula in the jar and seal it place it in the unit's tub and fill to the level in your jar with tap water and turn it on.

The jar will look like this when your done.

Only 2 more steps left but that will have to come later after I get my vacuum pump and build my filter. Later have FUN.

Hi Again All

Here is the vacuum filter setup.

Funnel with filter support plate, jar top drilled 1/8" holes hot glued in and will except 70 to 75mm filters.

Home made coffee filters will have to do for now.

The lid with plastic pipe pvc fittings for the funnel and 1/4" coupling to barbed push on for 1/4" pipe threads, also O rings both sides on each of the fittings.

Finally the last touch is to fit the funnel to the plastic fitting with black electric tape.

All done. This is mounted on a one gallon pickle jar and will hold a lot of juice.

Hi All

Well soon there will be the first batch of graphene, its drying now and it looks good. Only time will tell. Had to buy a new funnel because the only filters I could find were 13mm and my other home made one took 7.5mm max. BUMMER O-well pics later.

Hi All

This is the vacuum filter working with the black going in the top and coming out the bottom clean. You have to drain off the particles in suspension and leave the sludge, that is what is in the beaker.

stil waiting to talk to you, I have an approach that just take sugar and sulfuric acid to make the carbon and a couple pieces of steel turned on a lathe to make larger uniform layers of graphene that could be exfoliated using the electrolytic approach (that normally just makes little sheets the size of the angles in flake graphite) just wondering what graphite you used for this. I know vein graphite is highly ordered and is only about 20 bucks a pound, but the only place I know of to get it is asbury and they want to sell a whole 50 pound sack of it to get any from them, I have taken those granules (about the size of the end of a pencil lead) and squeezed them in a press between some glossy paper one time and two pieces of a hard drive platter the other time to make some seriously flat solid sections to get a diamagnetic sheet of graphite (floats over a group of neo magnets from a hard drive)

Hi TA

I am out on the road for the next two weeks so I am away from my lab. LOL I am using just graphite from Ebay and got 5# bag. I am using a 40 mesh for a strainer. That is what I mix with Smith's brew of water, Acetone and 1.5g graphite. That works BUT its very small amount comes from it. I will need to make about 2 gal of the mix to get any worth while amount. That is where I am at for now, I don't want to use the acid to make it.

ah ok, yeah the process I am looking at will make discs of single sheet graphene, so I doubt this process would work, with out acid or some other compound to intercalculate between the large single sheets, your method might still afford larger sheets than you are getting now, if you had a large disc of graphite that has close to the same order of pyrolytic graphite. just not sure what you would get the pure carbon from maybe heating it up in an oxygen starved environment? will work more on this once I am done with my bismuth experiments. :)

Hi All

This is a good day for Graphene, I made enough to measure finally. They say you have to crawl before you walk. That is what I learned today, the first graphene and I am proud of it. Not much be a 62.00 for 50ml its a lot. !.5g Now it time to make more and see if I can expand on how to make more with less.

Hi All

Just an update, I am reusing my acetone and water for the fourth time and still getting useful graphene out of it. The filter is one of the most important thing you need to buy and after using a lot of different types a double paper coffee filter works the best. As you can see in this video in goes in black and comes very clear, so every thing that is suspended in the solution is graphene in suspension.

You must be logged in to see this link.

The use of the solution is now what I consider cheep after the forth clean up it cost me $1.00 for the deionized water and 13.00 for the gallon of Acetone and still going. The cost per unit (1g) is below $4.00 a g so I am well ahead of the coastally per gram sold on Ebay. As Robert Murray=Smith has said all along, All you need to do is do it your self and it is not to big of a project. You all can see what I have used for equipment, very cheep Have fun ENJOY
