Very nice Ron. Reminds me of articles from Mother Earth News back in the day.

The principles still fit.

We've come a long ways since then, and have learned so much more through groups like this one.

My home had a conservatory, but improperly done.
The heat loss at night was too great.
Not properly separated.
That was the first item I corrected.
By reducing the amount of glass (adding back the insulated walls) and bringing it to a point of controllable insulated curtains, the heat input then well defeated the heat loss.

It's not always the amount of glass, but how much you can properly control.

Hi ODR

Sorry for late reply

I would agree with you regarding glass area , this is why i was considering the use of double glazing and how much more efficient it could make the designs shown in the article.

looks like another job for the calculator

It's an older article, yet the basic's are still true.

My 'Glass Wall' is now an insulated steel full glass French door (duel paned, argon gas(?) filled). Like it mainly for the magnetic weather stripping. Flanked by 2 Anderson full height casement windows.
Seals nicely for the winter and opens the whole wall for the summer.

I am a big fan of curtains! Sorry to say the Wife is not..
The one year I put one up on the Glass Wall showed an amazing difference. Yes, she was gone that weekend and I went for it.
They came down the following season..
I've yet to find something she's like..

I really wanted to build a small Solarium in front of the Door. My Building Code will not allow this due to the street set-back.. It would fall within 2ft of the limits.. Like that's going to 'tip the earth' or something.
Would be a great area to start seeds!
Sunny winter days and the heat builds, open the French Doors and let it in.
Best of both worlds.

My floor is carpeted, much to my Wife's dis-appointment (she wants hardwood), yet when the Sun hits it, it holds the heat nicely. That and it insulates against the basement.
I do smile when she mentions how cold the kitchen floor feels to her stocking feet..

The principles shown work.
It's now to adapt to modern technology (and your Wife) to make it happen.

Now, just imagine a clear film photovoltaic on this glass.. Have the view, get the solar gain and produce electricity?
Ya, that's what I'm looking for!

Still in the early stages and attempting to reach 10% efficiency, but..

I got such a kick out of having just said 'Imagine' and a friend posted a message to me a couple days later showing me this.

I just had to post it here.

If you do 'slip in' and visit, please let us know what you think of them.

Doug has built some 'side wall' can heaters, think of that with this glass.
I've built some inside widow heaters and think of it with that glass.
How about as the glass on your solar panel!

They attempting to reach 10%, no idea of where they are right now, but heading in the right direction.
Also haven't learned how they're basing this rating.

As we see more of them, which I'm certain we will, please post it.

It just doesn't really look good on the outside. :)
