Cas mention this and he's to credit if this thread goes anywhere.
You can blame me if it doesn't, but it's a subject of mention that should have it's own thread.

I'm familiar with Permies, go there a bit to discuss with folks that have.
Good site!
Another would be You must be logged in to see this link.
Not sure if anyone there is working on this, but the basic's, flue drafting, firebox sizing, etc...
Good folks there as well with experience.

Notice one thing with the Yurt floor heater.
The firebox is outside and he mentions it being smoky till it heated up.

His firebox is also horizontal..
Seems like that would mean attention while burning.
I really like the vertical firebox design!
I see 'so' many benefits to it.
Down side.. cold start..

The induction air by fan is a good idea, but, there's a lot of heat going (almost said up, LOL) out that flue.
My fear is that you'd fry it.

My thought goes towards a small starter stove outside.
Let's see if I can explain without a drawing..

Vent pipe leaves the building (horizontal) and instead of an elbow to turn vertical (believe still necessary to avoid blow back) it's a Tee. Below the Tee is the starter stove.
The starter stove helps create the draft required for the main stove to operate.

Many differentials involved and to be explored.
Yet I do believe they can be overcome.

We get a little further, we'll ask RonO for some math to figure it out.
He's pretty good at that! (actually dam good!)

Hey ODR

Ya the website you mentioned above has alot of good info on the basics but I do like Permies for this style of heater.
I think Mass Rocket Heaters actually take things to different level.
Like I mentioned before it's not for everybody or every household but if you have the space the barrel can be hidden in a utility type room or even basement..
Like in the one link I gave you can preheat water for water heater or thermal storage tank...which would actually work great in conjunction with a solar hot water setup in the winter when the sun doesn't shine much..

The only reason I was thinking a fan was because if the ductwork was being snaked thru a bench or..perhaps say a wall separating a living room and kitchen area faced with stone, brick, plaster, etc (to capture the heat) it wouldn't be 400 degrees at the end...also you could wire a snap switch along the ductwork somewhere that would..when a certain temp was reached...shut the fan off...but also have an actual switch for it so it's not running when you don't want it too...just a thought...

Also alot of ppl get around the initial smoke by lighting the fire thru the vent directly to the side of the vertical loading chamber..(after loading set a flat piece of stone or the like over access hole for loading)...I would also have to agree that the horizontal loading indoors wouldn't be great nor wife friendly lol...

The starter stove outside is a good idea and I'm sure would work quite well..I guess it would depend on the persons comfort level..whether they wanted to go outside every time to light it or not...

There are so many things you could do with this..or ways to design..

I'm curious to see what other ppl come up with!!

Corey

Oh I agree Corey, there are some rather nice designs out there folks have created. Mass Rocket Heaters are not what they were when they first were shown.
And I also agree, not for everyone. You need the space!

In the shoulder seasons, like now or late fall, 'cold' starts will be a pain. Yet during the middle of the season, like my woodstove, it will probably run all the time. We rarely match light in mid-season. Truth being, only when we let it go out to clear the ashes.
Probably the same with this.

Learning the best mass medium is going to be very interesting.
Determining length of vent pipe and how many elbows can be used is another.
Sizing the firebox to the above will also.

Very happy this is all here!
Very happy to see you bring it up!
