I scored a new battery from work today that has been on the shelf for about 16 month's.It's price tag is $500.00,so thats probably why it hasnt sold. The battery is 1000CCA's and 120Ah SLA.So a customer finaly wanted to buy it,only to find out that it was flat???.So after charging for 24 hours,it came back to 13.2 volt's.But when checking it with the battery tester,it came back with only 100CCA?.So they decided to throw it out,as it had passed it's 1 year warranty date.So i have bought it home to see what we can do with it.
My question is-will a battery sulphate up just by sitting on the shelf?. If so,this will require quite a grunty desulphator to bring it back to life. The odd thing is that the indicator window show's a bright green-which is suppose to mean the battery is healthy.

HI there TINMAN I AM NOT A GREAT EXPERT AT THIS BUT YES IT WILL SULPHATE AND WHAT WAS THE CAHRGING VOLTAGE YOU WERE USING.. I INCREASE THE CURRENT CAPACITY OF A LEAD ACID BATTERY JACK UP THE CHARGING VOLTAGE TO 16 PLUS VOLTS AND WATCH THE CHARGING CURRENT AND TEMPERATURE OF THE BATTERY BUT PLEASE DO THIS OUT SIDE..IF THIS FAIL DRASTIC ACTION NEED TO BE TAKEN.. REMOVE ALL THE ACID FROM THE BATTERY AND WASH THE INSIDE OF THE BAT WITH FILTERED RAIN WATER DISTILL WATER.. THEN MIX BAKING POWDER WITH RAIN WATER AND CAREFULLY FILL UP EACH CELL..AND STAND BACK BE CAREFULL WEAR PROTECTIVE MASK.DO THIS UNTILL NO BUBBLES IS OBSERVED IN THE CELLS.. THAT DOES HELP DESULPHAKE CHEMICALLY.. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.. BUT REMEMBER SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT PLEASE.. AND WITH THE INDUCTION COOKTOP EXPERIMENT WHEN U PLACE THE LOW RESISTIVE WIRE AND THE POWER DROP ON THE WATT METER AND U SAID EURIKA I HAVE FOUND GOLD NOT NOT..I WILL EXPLAIN IF YOU SKYPE ME KABOSOTER MY NAME BUT TO IN CREASE EFFICIENCY USE FERRITE CORE TO COVER YOUR BIFILAR.. Remember back when you got the last lot of batts from work and I commented on the temperature difference from the concrete floor vs. the top of the battery would cause it to lose charge ... this same effect holds true for sulphation of a standing battery.

Anyway,i will try and revive it with my new super pulse charger lol-this one's a doozey lol.

Hi TM

The set on the floor and go dead is back from when battery cases were made of wood. If it is in a plastic case then no problem, it won't go dead from being on the floor or dirt or any other spot at room temp. It will start to sulfate the minute the liquid is added to the battery, That is why the shelf life is to be only 1 yr from the date on the battery. After the 1 year there is only 80% left in it. As far as desulfating it stay with the C/D of the C20 rate and enjoy the use of the battery when discharging it.

Hi Doug
I am going to try a new idea as far as a desulphator go's. It's quite a simple setup, and power adjustable by just changing a globe. I will discharge it on the solar light setup in the house, but at 120 amp hours-this may take a few days lol.
I will start a new thread on the solid state section on the new pulse charger.

Hi Brad

To desulfate a battery it is important to discharge at a C20 rate. Reason is you desulfate on both charge and discharge. If you use a slow discharge it won't desulfate but on the charge and that will take twice as long and not sure it will not take a lot longer than that. There is a guy that only charges to desulfate and he figures a day per pound and no discharge. Strange

Hi Brad

Your first post said 120 AH / 20 = 6 amps C&D max. So with that said I would suggest at least 5 C&D's before going with the slow discharge and the once every month there after followed by a 24 hr rest. After you do the 5 C&D retest the AH test and see if it gets better.
