that is a good way to check all your transistor's . i have found out the some transistor's i have purchased online they past the internal diode test (pos lead to base and current will flow to collector and emitter but not the other way around) but when they are hooked to your circuit they seem to have a steady switching or hang up or drag in the circuit . so i tested them on circuit c and d on the above link and found them to be operationally faulty (in other-words will open fast but close slow or the other way around)and that does cause some problems with consistency in the output....

sometimes meltdowns though kinda $$ make the best inspirations!!!

Way to go Doug.

Just one thing the timer is a dual type NE556 (not NE555 as on the diagram , single timer ) the parts list is however correct.

I decided I really wanted to support Colin Mitchell over at talkinelectronics.com (great site) so I bought a transistor tester kit from him, so I will have to get that soldered up.. looks good too.

Hi Ron

Do you think that I can use a polyester-film cap in place of the tantalum bead for a while. Will have to go 30 miles there ans 30 miles back just for that one cap??

Hi Doug

I think you would ( will have ) better results using a standard electrolytic cap. If you haven't got a 0.47uF then wire two 1uF caps in series. Try to use 16 volt working types if you can

Tant bead caps offer very low leakage properties and good stability but its not that important in this application.

Hi Ron

I thought I would ask, Looked it up on wikipedia and didn't see any thing that would stop it from working. Just wanted to make sure and THANKS many times

Hi Doug

I think i know where your comming from , if not please let me know.

The pin out of the NE556 in the circuit diagram is not how the NE556 looks in real life thats for sure ! Ok so if you look at the NE556 ( pins facing downwards ) you will see a small dot or indentation at one of the corner pins , this is pin number one
. Position the NE556 so that this pin is at the top left hand side of the ic when your looking at the ic from above. Counting down from pin one

1. 14
2 13
3 12
4 11
5 10
6 9
7 8

Connect the pins by number , as shown on the circuit diagram and that should be it.

EDIT the editors adjusting the pin number layout

Hi Ron

That is not making sense to me and I can't read my circuit drawing that well in regards to where all the wires cross , all I have is black lines that cross do they or don't they If you see there I am coming from. I have the 556 drawing of the pins but to change it over to the 555 pin hookup ? Between the 2 problems I am kind of lost. I even went to the home site and its still just black and white on the wires

Hi Doug

Ok , so i got it wrong , lol

I have drawn large black blobs where the wires join , if you dont see a large blob then theres no connection. Have emailed it to you

Your welcome Doug

Hopefully that should be it. I'm on my "travels" again so if a problem occurs contact me via forum.
