The biggest problem with a Vawt, is that, the very blades that are making power, in certain positions, are also fighting power production, as they are driven to the point where they begin "catching wind", again. Those blades opposite of the blades doing work, are "fighting the system", if you will.

Check out this interesting prototype that solves that problem in having auto furled blades.

Hi KC

That looks real good. I would like to see that in a 20 MPH wind, it may be to weak for that kind of wind. But for light wind it did look real good.

hey Doug, howya been bud?

I think these are just proto's and the fellow is well aware they need to be made much more beefy. but yes, it is very interesting indeed. it was brought to my attention by a fellow who has already done a lot of DIY wind, himself too, and he's very stoked on it.

I'm not in a great spot for VAWT style turbines, but one version I toyed was using PVC pipe and added a 'flapping' wing (sheet metal hinged) to the edge to catch more wind and roll back as it goes 'leeward'.

For me, I found that I still needed the fixed wing to catch wind early, for the flipper didn't react until it was in the power portion of the cycle. I felt it never did use the full potential of wind..

That being said, it worked much better than without the adding flipping wing.
